New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom was already in midseason form in his first spring training start on Saturday.

There is a ton of excitement following the New York Mets this spring. They have a new owner in Steve Cohen and new big-name players like catcher James McCann and shortstop Francisco Lindor. Those two acquisitions are expected to do wonders for the pitching staff, specifically Jacob deGrom. Speaking of, deGrom made his spring training debut on Saturday, and he already looks to be in midseason form.

During his two-inning performance against the Houston Astros, deGrom hit 100-mph and 99-mph twice on three consecutive pitches!

Mets: Jacob deGrom’s dominance shouldn’t surprise us

In Saturday’s exhibition contest, deGrom struck out three batters and allowed just one hit in two scoreless frames. Yeah, deGrom is going to be just fine heading into the regular-season opener against the Washington Nationals.

Speaking of the first game of the regular-season, Mets manager Luis Rojas announced that deGrom will be the Opening Day starter. This is deGrom’s third consecutive Opening Day start, joining Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden and Johan Santana as the only Mets pitchers to accomplish this feat.

Last season, there was not much normalcy due to the coronavirus pandemic. A 60-game campaign, seven-inning doubleheaders and universal designated hitters made for a weird year. Yet, deGrom gave us a sense of normal life with his usual dominance on the pitchers mound.

In 12 starts last season, deGrom led the league in strikeouts (104) and strikeouts-per-nine innings (13.8) through 68 innings. Additionally, deGrom posted a 2.38 ERA, a 0.956 WHIP and a 4-2 overall record. With these stats, deGrom finished third in NL Cy Young voting, losing to then-Cincinnati Reds pitcher and current Los Angeles Dodger Trevor Bauer.

Mets fans were feeling confident based off their rather strong offseason in terms of acquisitions. They have to feel even better after watching deGrom pitch this spring.
